More on McCain’s Palin Pick
You know, the more I think about McCain’s vice-presidential pick, the more irritated I get. Let’s look at this for a minute. He chose a young woman from Alaska, Sarah Palin, to be his running mate. She is currently the governor of Alaska. Before that, she was the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. It’s apparent that she was not fully vetted (see my previous post on this) or McCain would have talked about some of her issues when he named her, or had his campaign simultaneously release a statement.
What I’m mad about (and a bit frightend by) is this: A 72-year-old man with a history of cancer and time as a POW — being tortured – chose Sarah Palin to be his running mate. I know it’s a sad and overused cliché, but she literally will be one heartbeat from the presidency. Is she really a person who can confront, say, Putin? She has been commander in chief of the Alaska National Guard for two years. I’m not impressed. Does that make her ready to command the nation’s armed forces, currently mired in two wars? Does the fact that Alaska is across the Bering Strait make her ready to confront the Russians? Or radical Islamists? I don’t think so.
I really think McCain gave the whole country a great, big f*** you with this pick. I absolutely think this pick was about pandering — to women and to the conservatives in his own party who weren’t fired up by his candidacy. But it’s a reckless pick. It showed what his true aim is: trying to win an election, not to effectively govern the country if he’s elected. If McCain is this reckless when choosing a running mate, what else will he be reckless with should he become president?
I agree with you. This was a terrible pick. If he wanted to pick a woman, there are some terrific women that I would support. I am a big fan of Olympia Snowe for starters. She’s a good moderate Republican.
I think he got mad because he couldn’t have his friend Joe Lieberman (that is the rumor) so he said fine – here’s my pick.
One 15-minute conversation and that’s good enough for McCain?
Deanna – to make matters worst, Wasilla has approx 8,000 people. That’s the size of a LARGE high school in the lower 49.
Palin was a ‘part-time’ Mayor; the town wasn’t large enough to warrant a full time Mayor.
She went from Mayor to Governor of approximately 600,000 – you see that much people walking a few square blocks in NYC or in DC at lunch time.
Not to mention the Washington dynamic.
DC is like no other place in the States. How do you go from ‘thinking Alaska’ to ‘thinking DC’?
I’ve been to Alaska twice and been to DC several times and that transition for her and her family is going to be traumatic.
I won’t even mention that she doesn’t know where to find Afghanistan on the map and she doesn’t know what a VP does.

And according to Cindy McCain Palin has national security experience because Russia is close to Alaska (sigh)
You’re right, Paulette. Palin’s experience is extremely light. It’s scary that this woman could become president if something happens to McCain. It’d be enough to make you laugh, if it wasn’t ultimately so serious. It really is a big f*** you from McCain to the rest of the country.
