McCain’s Campaign Finances

The Democratic National Committee is trying to legally prevent the Federal Election Commission from allowing McCain out of public matching funds during the primary.  The DNC is arguing that McCain violated the law when he decided that he was in the matching funds program, then he was out.  McCain had used the promise of federal funds to secure loans to keep his campaign afloat when it was in real danger of running out of money.  McCain also used the promise of federal money to qualify for the Ohio ballot during the Republican primary.

I’m no lawyer, but it seems to me that McCain can ill afford even the appearance of violating election law.  Senator McCain was the driving force (along with Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin) of election law reform.  It looks to me that McCain played fast and loose with election law, taking advantage of the fact that there is no quorum in the FEC and that there wasn’t anyone in power keeping an eye on campaign finance dealings.  I obviously don’t know whether McCain violated the law, as the DNC contends.  But it certainly looks like he may have, to me.
